                                                    Detailed Design Report

On detailed design phase, I received a Conceptual Design Report from other team and I was required to select one design decision for further research. The product was a cloth hanger (see Figure 1) consisting of a strap, which withstands the weight of the cloth, and a sleeve, an elastic band which covers the back of the chair. My work was to recommend an appropriate material for the sleeve band.

After laborious research in library, three options were considered: neoprene - a specific type of rubber, spandex fibre and nylon. Since they belong to different families, these options are quite divergent. However, I was unable to reach the final decision due to limited knowledge in material science. Moreover, it was difficult to compare them directly since the sources I found usually focus on a certain family of materials. For example, rubber family: different types of rubber are compared based on standard physical test results. In each family, some unique characteristics that the other families may not possess are shown and analyzed, even for the properties that I am familiar with (such as stress, % of elongation, stiffness...etc), the comparison between materials is mostly qualitative. (i.e. "good" or "bad", instead of providing numerical data). Those terms are very vague and thus it is impossible to provide an accurate or a convincing evaluation to the performance of materials belonging to different families.

Due to time constraint, I could not gather enough quantitative measurements related to the properties that I was focusing on. My lack of research experience made my work inefficient, and sometimes I got completely lost. However, this project makes me realize my weaknesses that I should improve on in the future.
